Kaspersky Lab is pleased to announce that the first ever South American round of the international conference “Cybersecurity for the Next Generation” has concluded successfully. 2013 saw Kaspersky Lab’s global conference visit South America for the first time, providing an opportunity for the region’s talented students to present their research at the Faculty of Engineering Systems of the National Polytechnic University of Ecuador.

The program committee, consisting of leading Kaspersky Lab analysts, reputable professors and IT security industry experts, selected the winners, with the best projects receiving awards and generous cash prizes (1st place $1000, 2nd place $750 and 3rd place $500) from Kaspersky Lab. The authors of the winning papers were also invited to attend the international round of the ‘CyberSecurity for the Next Generation’ conference.

The Best Paper category was won by Lilia Elena Gonzalez from La Salle University Mexico City, with a work titled “Performance Comparison of a Distance Classifier and a Feed-Forward Neural Network in the Classification of Malware Variants”. The Innovation & Originality award went to Johanna Malla from National Polytechnic School, Quito. Only one participant from each regional tour normally qualifies for the final tour of the conference; however, the program committee decided to hand a second invitation to Johanna to present her research at the finals in the UK in June 2013, as her paper – “Blue Bugging Attack on Cell Phones with Bluetooth Technology” – showed both practicality and insightful security concerns for Bluetooth technology.

The prize for the most Practical Application was awarded to Galoget Latorre from National Polytechnic School, Quito for the presentation “Reverse Engineering: How to create a Basic Environment for Malware Analysis oriented to Undergraduate Students”. Galoget also received the special Best Presentation award.
