The authoritative German testing center Stiftung Warentest acknowledges the excellence of Kaspersky Lab software. Stiftung Warentest, an organization founded by the German government to conduct independent tests of products and services offered on the German market, has published the results of the its testing for data information security solutions. Kaspersky® Anti-Virus Personal received the highest rating in the "Virus Defense" category and was presented with the prestigious Stiftung Warentest award. In order to determine the best program for the defense of home computers, Stiftung Warentest ran a wide range of tests evaluating the credentials of the most popular products on the German market. Taking part in the testing were 16 software products: 5 anti-virus solutions (produced by H+BEDV, ESET, Norman, Panda Software, and Kaspersky Lab), 4 firewall solutions (Zone Alarm Pro, Zone Alarm Free, Agnitum Outpost, Norman Personal Firewall) and 7 information security suites (McAfee Internet Security, Symantec Norton Internet Security, Secuties Online Security, G-Data Internet Security Kit, Softwin Bitdefender Professional, Trendmicro PC-Cillin Edition 2003). Considering today's most pressing information security problems, the testing organizers stressed to main areas of defense - protection against viruses and protection against hackers - and therefore logically divided the software products being tested into the appropriate corresponding category. Testing for the anti-virus programs involved the following criteria:
  • Functionality - the level of virus detection (the testing used a collection of 546 malicious programs of various types) and the ability to neutralize dangerous objects. Additionally, a program's general characteristics were noted (resources required, boot-up etc.).
  • Update frequency, including level of security provided for update downloads
  • Interface - convenience, comprehensiveness, access to documentation
  • Installation and de-installation procedures
  • Additional functionalities
The Stiftung Warentest tests also took into account program cost - by testing rules, a software solution could not cost more than 80 Euros. Kaspersky Anti-Virus turned out to be the only anti-virus solution to not permit a single malicious program to penetrate and impressed the testers with its overall quality as it piled up test points in receiving the highest score given by the test center. The anti-virus defense level provided by information protection software suites was also checked. Among those products only two, Steganos Internet Security and G-Data Internet Security Kit achieved perfect scores. It is not a coincidence that both these solutions used the Kaspersky Lab Anti-Virus kernel. The data from Stiftung Warentest analyses are published in the popular magazine called 'test'. The test results regarding data security solutions appeared in the March 2003 issue as well as in Stiftung Warentest's special publication called 'FINANZtest' (in the April 2003 edition). In recommending an anti-virus solution, Stiftung Warentest's editors summarized, "Nowadays not a single computer accessing the Internet should be without a program defending against worms and hacker attacks. For quality anti-virus defense nothing beats Kaspersky Anti-Virus, and it only costs $50 Euros" "We are very happy about the recognition earned by our product in this independent survey. Computer users in Germany, Switzerland and Austria are exceptionally attentive to such test results and often prefer products recommended by Stiftung Warentest. This high profile and prestigious survey gives us an additional opportunity to popularize Kaspersky Lab products in these markets, and assists us in our goal to lower the general virus threat level the world over", said Denis Zenkin, Head of Corporate Communications at Kaspersky Lab. About Stiftung Warentest Stiftung Warentest was founded in 1964 by the German government as an institute dedicated to researching the quality of various products and services.
